Treating bed bug bites can offer some quick relief from itching and swelling – but it is in no way a solution for dealing with bed bugs.

It is very important to completely eradicate bed bugs – otherwise you will eventually spread bed bugs to family, friends, strangers, co-workers and neighbours.

First Steps for Treating Bed Bug Bites

  1. Talk to your doctor to make sure they are in fact bites from bed bugs. It is important to first rule out other possibilities of skin irritation or dangerous conditions. Your doctor or dermatologist can also offer helpful professional advice on bite relief treatment that’s right for you.
  2. Talk to Your Pharmacist – A pharmacist will have knowledge of the latest products available at your local pharmacy.
  3. General skin relief products. There are many lotions and creams that are marketed as mosquito or sunburn relief products that are also effective for similar symptoms and itchiness caused by bed bug bites. Be sure to read the label and ask your pharmacist or doctor if a particular product is  good idea.

Over-The-Counter Medications to Reduce Itching

  • Calamine Lotion
  • Cortisone Creams
  • Topical Anesthetic with Pramoxine (many available)
  • Hydrocortisone Creams
  • Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Benadryl, etc –  reduces swelling

Home Remedies and Do-It-Yourself Techniques for Treating Bed Bug Bites

  • Baking Soda and water paste – spot treat bites
  • Anti-Itch Techniques (astringents)
    Witch Hazel
    St. John’s Wort
    Lemon Juice
  • Aloe Plant Gel – cooling sensation and has antibiotic and anti-fungal properties as well.
  • Peppermint Oil Bath – an age-old home remedy
